Frugal Fashion Find: $20 Prescription Glasses from Zeelool
Do you hate obligatory human interaction and monotonous small talk?
Oh. No?
Just me?
Well, maybe the $20 bargain price point of stylish, prescription glasses will compel you as much as the promise of the absence meaningless human contact compels me.
Disclaimer: For those personally offended by contributing to the economy in China, please view some of my other content, and pretend you never saw this.
Yes, the glasses are assembled in a lab and shipped from China. It took about three weeks for me to get my glasses.
How did I get these two pairs of statement glasses for less than $40? Easy as 1, 2, 3:
- See your eye doctor for an updated prescription, if you do not already have one that is less than a year old: You will need an up-to-date prescription to get your prescription filled at zeelool.com just as you would any other eyeglasses store. Also, be sure to request your PD (pupil distance) measurement. Your optometrist does not typically provide the PD measurement, as this is usually measured by whoever prepared your glasses and lenses. But he or she can upon request. If not, Zeelool provides guided instructions at its website on how to do it yourself. Warning: This was a confusing endeavor for me to do alone, and I had to recruit the services of an optics engineer who works on flight landing systems for military aircraft. Just sayin'.
- Choose your frames & lenses: Zeelool has hundreds of designs and colors from which to choose, ranging from basic rounded and squared frames to cat-eyed and contemporary-shaped statement glasses. There are many options to customize your lenses, from scratch and glare resistant to shades and more. With each upgrade comes an added cost. I added scratch resistant frames for an extra $9.99, and I now wish I had added a smudge-proof coating of some sort as well. I find myself cleaning my glasses incessantly. However, zeelool provided me with a cleaning cloth and case for each pair of glasses. That comes in handy.
- Enter your prescription info & pay: You have to enter your prescription information for each eye, as well as your PD measurement. If you cannot readily discern this info from your script, you can take a photo and submit it to an agent through online chat or email, and they can interpret it for you. This is what I did because I cannot follow simple instructions without guidance apparently.
About three weeks later, I had these fancy new glasses. They took some getting used to, as new prescription glasses usually do. But I have had them for several months, and I have never received so many compliments on glasses.
I should probably be a paid Zeelool ambassador as much as I recommend their services to others. Not a sponsor.
I have no sponsors. I am, however, available for said soul-sellery.
Pros:
- Easy ordering.
- No nauseatingly tedious human interactions.
- Friendly and responsive customer service. Representatives were friendly, helpful, patient, responded quickly via live chat on Zeelool, phone calls and emails. And the company will remake the glasses at a steep discount is there is an error, even if it is your fault, such as if you inadvertently provide incorrect prescription information. If it is their error, they will remake them at no cost to you.
- Can't beat the prices!
Cons:
- Returns, if necessary, are not economical. Shipping to China is expensive. Like, more than $100 expensive, negating the
- You can't physically try on your frames until you have already paid for them. In an in-person shop, you can try on frames to your heart's content.
- Customer service representatives I spoke with did not speak or write English properly, though t was easy enough to figure out what they meant.
Happy eyeglass shopping!
