Microdermabrasion at Home: Renew Your Skin aka The Silk'n Reveal Microderm Wand: Hit or Hype?

The Silk'n Microderm Wand and I take our maiden voyage.

Your skin takes a beating. And eventually, it shows.

Beneath dull, dry skin and discoloration, there is young, vibrant, more even skin.

Sometimes it just needs a little help coming to the surface.

Enter exfoliation.

Exfoliating just means getting rid of dead surface skin cells to allow that newer, youthful skin to show its vibrant self.

More often than not, we need  help in that department.

I have oily, acne-prone skin, and most of my cleansers have microbeads or some scrubby rough component to help turn my skin over and keep the pimples -- and their respective scarring -- at bay.

But sometimes you just need a little something extra. For those more glamorous of us, that might mean a trip to the spa once a month for a professional microdermabrasion treatment.

For those of us living our best DIY lives, we want to get similar results at home.

Enter the Silk'n Reveal Microderm Wand.

The grand reveal of the Silk'n Reveal.

According to the company, the "Reveal uncovers healthier, younger-looking skin every week for skin that glows."

It has two diamond tips -- fine and coarse -- and a vacuum action, similar to though not as strong as what you experience at the day spa.

Billed to "improve texture, skin tone, and elasticity," is it a hit or is it hype?

Immediately after my first use of The Silk'n Reveal.
My skin after week 2 of the Silk'n Reveal microderm wand.
At $129, it is a little bit of an investment, but from the time you plug this thing in and move it around your face, you can see and feel results. It's a hit!

The filter caught a bunch of gunk and dead skin that my best efforts cleaning and scrubbing with my hands or electronic brush dust didn't sweep away. Some of it, I'm sure was dead skin.

I used the fine diamond tip all over my face. Everyone should start with the fine tip. You can always work your way up to the coarse, or use the coarse on parts of your face that can better tolerate the rougher texture.

Use this product once a week, and you can build up to twice a week with time. Be sure to use your regular cleansers beforehand and follow with your favorite moisturizers and serums.

For those without a moisturizing regimen, allow me to suggest Anew day cream, night cream & serum from youravon.com/garthia. (Shameless plug & free shipping on orders of $40 or more).

Not quite ready to spend $129? Or not sure is physical exfoliation is a go for you?

Give the  Mary Kay Time Wise Microdermabrasion Set a try. It's $47.99 on Amazon and is a two-step microdermabrasion system you apply with your hands. Step 1 is Refine, which has finely ground exfoliating crystals to uncover the new skin hiding beneath those dull dead cells. Step 2 is Renew, a pore minimizing moisturizer.

I used to use the Mary Kay Microdermabrasion Set twice a week, religiously, and highly recommend it.

Now I rotate between the Mary Kay set and the Silk'N Reveal Microderm Wand.

If your skin is easily irritated by physical exfoliation, this might not be the product for you. I would suggest using an exfoliant/moisturizer such as the Julep's Night Shift Deep Sleep Night Mask, $34 at https://amzn.to/2FBxOkm. I've written about this product previously and swear by it.

And if you are not allergic to strawberries, you can mash one into a paste with a fork and apply that to clean skin for 10-20 minutes and wash away. Strawberries naturally exfoliate skin and have antioxidant properties and Vitamin C. Eat em, wear em, love em.

Unless you're allergic. Then do none of these things. Try mixing a tablespoon of sugar with a tablespoon of coconut oil, and scrub to your heart's content. Then rinse with water and pat dry. Cuz who's allergic to sugar? ... Not I. Sugar is my friend.

Gluten is my friend.

Carbs are my friend.

Did I mention, I am also not a diet and fitness guru?

Happy exfoliating.
